World Wide Web

Updated: Mar 26, 2019

Thirty years ago the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW) a tool that permits us to communicate through a computer connected to the Internet was developed by British physicist name Tim Berners-Lee on March 12 1989 while working for European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The resources of the WWW may be accessed by users through a software application called a web browser where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locator (URLs). Tim Bernes-Lee wrote the first web browser in 1990 while employed at CERN in Switzerland. On 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web would be free to use for anyone.

Multiple web resources with a common theme, a common domain name or both, make up a website. A website may be accessible via a public Internet Protocol (IP) network, such as the internet, or a private Local Area Network (LAN), by referencing a uniform Resource Locator (URL) that identifies the site.
