The All New Blackberry Leap
Blackberry, the pioneer of the smartphone, is making yet another bid to retain its already dwindling segment of the smartphone market, and they are attacking the market with a fairly interesting strategy. In a market dominated by hulking handheld machines like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Iphone 6 plus, their latest device is actually aimed at the entry level and mid-tier consumers, two segments who when combined, outnumber the top-tier consumers.
The reasoning is simple, trying to compete with the primates of the smartphone landscape would be suicide for a company that solely focuses on manufacturing mobile phones, the leaders in the proverbial game (Samsung and Apple,) also manufacture a plethora of electronics, and as such, carry hefty marketing budgets that when combined with well-funded R ‘n’ D teams and facilities will pose a fatal threat to most competitors. So Blackberry decided to simply dodge these mammoths and produced the best mid-tier handheld device on the market thus far.
The new Blackberry Leap has a 5” HD display, 16GB flash memory (expandable to 128GB via SD card,) 8MP rear camera that capture video in 1080p HD recording at 30fps, 2MP front facing camera that capture video in 720p HD resolution 294PPI and 2GB of ram, all powered by a Qualcomm 8960 Dual Core 1.5 GHz processor. The only drawback really is that it’s still running the underperforming blackberry 10OS, but when you compare that to other phones in the same tier, it’s actually rather competitive. At a price point of between $349.99 - $360 with no term, depending on network carrier, and a two year term price of $0 - $49.99 look for this device to entice consumers to at least give it a try simply based on price and features, especially since BB has drastically improved its app market to include many popular offerings that it was missing in the past.
