Are you wondering how streaming works? I didn’t have a clue until I was invited to be part of a team to help stream a live event.

I did some research, and this is what I concluded: Streaming is a compress signals send through wire or wireless connection, could be video, sound or both, usually streaming happening in two different ways, multicast is use in live events because the signal is sent as it happens, you do not have to wait until the totality of the file is downloaded, a bit of a delay may occur by buffering otherwise a one hour event will stream in one hour.

There are 3 major players you can use to watch a streaming event, Microsoft Windows media player, Apple Quick Time player or Real player, though no always compatibles .

To stream you need a server that is adapted for this purpose and uses a Real Time streaming protocol (RTSP), and the method use on live events are done through multicasting so many people can watch at the same time, other form of streaming is unicast that happens when we watch You Tube or Netflix, people watch the same event a different time therefore each person takes different stream from the server.

To broadcast live video content you need a camera and a computer through the Internet, and the viewers will play the content via the web.

Almost all the media we watch or listen to online – such as YouTube or Netflix – is delivered to our devices using streaming technology.

In fact streaming is now so mainstream that many of us rely on it to watch sports broadcasts using apps such as BT Sport or to catch up with TV shows using services such as BBC iPlayer.

There are a whole raft of online streaming music services, including Spotify, Napster and Deezer, which give you instant access to a streaming catalogue of millions of tunes stored in the Cloud. That way, you don’t have to store music on your PC or phone. These streaming services are available through Google Chromecast and the BT YouView box. Some are also available through smart TVs' own user interfaces.
